Hurricane Preparation Checklist for Homeowners
The full pre-season and 72-hours-out checklist used by Florida and Gulf Coast contractors to protect a house.

Start of season (June 1)
- Inspect the roof, especially flashing, ridge cap, and any cracked tiles or curling shingles.
- Clean gutters and downspouts; extend downspouts 4 feet from foundation.
- Trim trees: no limbs within 8 feet of the roof or service drop.
- Service the generator: oil, plug, transfer switch test, fresh fuel stabilizer.
- Test the sump pump and battery backup.
- Verify your insurance: wind/hurricane deductible, flood policy (NFIP takes 30 days to activate), roof age clause.
- Photograph every room and every wall for claims documentation.
72 hours before landfall
- Refuel cars and the generator can collection (5–10 gallons).
- Withdraw $300–$500 cash.
- Refill prescriptions for two weeks.
- Move patio furniture, planters, grills inside.
- Lower pool water 12 inches; turn off pool pump breaker.
- Install storm shutters or pre-cut plywood (5/8" minimum, anchors every 18").
- Charge phones, battery banks, laptops. Buy ice.
24 hours before
- Bag-up valuables; move to highest interior room.
- Turn refrigerator to coldest; fill empty space with water bottles.
- Fill bathtubs with water for flushing toilets.
- Turn off propane tank.
- Park cars away from trees and on the highest ground available.
After the storm
- Don't drive on flooded roads.
- Photograph all damage before you touch it — insurance.
- Beware of post-storm contractor scams: door-to-door solicitation, cash-only, no license number. Use QOTA to get verified pros.
